The Fat Willy’s Cornwall Story

What began with one man, 100 T-shirts and a Newquay shop has become a Cornish surf-lifestyle name loved by generations.

It started with Big Rog

This is the story of Roger ‘Big Rog’ Ward, the family behind the brand and the unmistakable logo that has travelled around the world.

In the late 1970s, Roger Ward was working as a plumber and raising a young family. When recession made work uncertain, he found another way forward. Roger began selling clothes at Sunday markets, then started wholesaling plain T-shirts from the Midlands to shops around Cornwall.

By the early 1980s, he was travelling to New York and back in a day to source heat-applied transfers. He also opened a small screen-printing factory in Kettering. Those ideas came together in Newquay in 1984, when Roger opened a shop at 44 Fore Street selling printed T-shirts.

The name that nearly never happened

Early in 1985, on a flight home from New York, Roger had his eureka moment. He wanted a name that felt cool, memorable and full of character. Fat Willy’s Surf Shack was born.

The first reaction was not exactly encouraging. Roger’s employees told him it would never sell. He trusted his instinct. In August 1985, he put a small display of 100 Fat Willy’s T-shirts at the back of the Newquay shop. They sold out in two days. By 1986, 44 Fore Street was devoted entirely to Fat Willy’s Surf Shack.

More than a logo

Everything about the original shop reflected Roger. His love of 1950s rock and roll brought the music and jukebox. Greenery and cane details were inspired by a bar he had seen in Lanzarote. The animatronic tropical birds were a hit with children, even if their constant chirping drove the team slightly mad.

Most important of all was the atmosphere. Roger wanted the shop to feel friendly, lively and welcoming to everyone: surfers, holidaymakers, local families and anyone who simply liked the look. That spirit is still at the heart of Fat Willy’s today.

Friendly, lively and welcoming to everyone.

From Cornwall to the world

A logo that travelled

Roger liked to help people get started, so family and friends took Fat Willy’s to seaside towns across Britain, including Blackpool, Southport, Weymouth, Torquay and Bude. The name also travelled overseas, from the Balearics and Portugal to Barbados and Newport Beach in Los Angeles.

Customers carried it further. Over the years, photographs have arrived from Everest, South America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The logo became part of the holiday: a bright, nostalgic reminder of Cornwall, good times and the feeling of discovering something you wanted to take home.

Then and now

A family business

Fat Willy’s remains a family business. The brand is owned by Roger’s wife, Teresa, who is now retired, and the Cornwall business is run by their eldest son, Steve Ward. Steve has been involved since 1985 and has printed Fat Willy’s clothing from the beginning. Fi joined the business in 2006, and their three children are now involved too.

The systems and printing technology have moved on, but the important things have not. The logo will not change. The welcome will stay family-friendly. The clothing is designed in-house, and every Fat Willy’s Cornwall print is produced here in Cornwall.

The original is still a favourite

The large black T-shirt remains the bestseller: simple, comfortable and instantly recognisable. Across the collection, the priorities are the same ones customers have valued for generations: quality, durability, comfort, affordability and more considered choices for the future.

Fat Willy’s has always been for the wannabe surfer as much as the lifelong one. It is colourful without taking itself too seriously, nostalgic without being stuck in the past, and proudly Cornish. Today, parents and grandparents bring in children who are discovering the brand for the first time. That third generation is helping the story continue.

Proudly Cornish

Cornwall will always be home

Since 1985, Fat Willy’s Surf Shack has grown from one bold idea into a name recognised far beyond Newquay. Wherever the logo travels, the heart of the brand stays here. Cornwall is home, and that is where the story will continue.
